Midwife Services

La Maison de naissance du Fjord-au-Lac Birth Center, located in Chicoutimi, is a warm welcome space for those who are pregnant and families from the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region. The services offered are adapted to the needs of those who are pregnant, their partner and their children. The family can be involved in all stages of childbirth and postnatal care.

Midwives who work at the birth center provide comprehensive maternity care from the start of pregnancy until six weeks after birth. They base their practice on respect for physiology, the natural process of pregnancy, childbirth, and the autonomy of those giving birth and families. They offer comprehensive care, considering the physical, psychological, and social dimensions of this unique event that is the birth of a child.

Birthplace

Midwives are the only professionals to offer families the choice of place of birth. Clients can choose between the Birth Center, the Chicoutimi hospital and home. Please note that home birth is possible depending on certain criteria, including the distance from the hospital.

Access to services

Any healthy pregnant person can be followed by a midwife. The midwife’s scope of practice being limited to so-called normal pregnancy, a health check-up to ensure the client’s eligibility is done at the first appointment. Subsequently, regular meetings with the team of midwives ensure that the pregnancy is progressing normally.

The services of a midwife do not incur costs for holders of the Quebec health insurance card.

The reception is open and welcomes families from Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

What training does the midwife have?

The midwife completed more than four years of training at the University of Quebec at Trois-Rivières (UQTR) and is also certified in obstetric emergencies and advanced neonatal resuscitation.

Is the midwife a member of a professional order?

Yes. The midwife must be a member of the Order of Midwives of Quebec/ Ordre des sages-femmes du Québec (OSFQ) to practice their profession.

What are the costs associated with the different services?

The services of a midwife do not incur costs for holders of the Quebec health insurance card.

If I am followed at the birth center, do I also have to be followed by a doctor?

It is not necessary to have medical follow-up with a doctor. The midwife offers all the care necessary for complete monitoring of the pregnancy. It is important to have only one medical follow-up.

If I want to give birth in the hospital, can I be followed at the birth center?

Yes. The midwife accompanies you to the place you have chosen for the birth of your newborn. During your follow-up, she discusses the different options with you as well as the particularities related to each.

I don’t know if my health condition allows me to be seen by a midwife, what should I do?
