Postnatal

This period begins as soon as the child is born and lasts a few weeks. This is a period of transition for both the newborn and parents.

CLSC Postnatal Visit
+

Approximately 24 to 72 hours after your release, if you accept, you will receive a call from a CLSC nurse to answer your questions. Subsequently, this nurse will come to your home to ensure your well-being, parent well-being, and that of your newborn. Contact will be made from the hospital; you will not have to take any steps.

After the visit, if you have any questions, you can contact the perinatal department of your CLSC.

Quebec newborn hearing screening program (PQDSN)
+

The Quebec newborn hearing screening program (PQDSN) will be gradually deployed throughout the region during the summer of 2023.

This program aims to:

  • Detect as early as possible the presence of hearing loss at birth which could harm the child’s development
  • Intervene quickly to reduce the impacts of hearing loss

Thus, during the baby’s stay in the hospital, following the birth, a nurse will offer parents the possibility of having their newborn undergo a hearing screening test through the PQDSN. They are free to accept or refuse.

This screening test is painless and without risk for the baby. It is performed while the baby is calm or asleep. Parents receive the screening results before discharge from the hospital. If required, the baby is referred without delay to the diagnostic confirmation center associated with the establishment in order to carry out a complete hearing assessment and establish a diagnosis if necessary.
